Ash Wednesday at The Creek

March 1 is the start of Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter.  This day, Ash Wednesday, is the day in which you may see crosses upon the foreheads of many, marked out in ashes.

At the Creek we will mark this with a short time of age-appropriate learning about our church traditions of Ash Wednesday. Your child will have an opportunity to see and touch the palm branches, observe their burning and be offered the placement of ashes upon the forehead by Pastor Bryan of River47 Church.  Pastor Bryan will be available at the 8:30 and 9:00 drop off times for any parents or siblings that might also wish to receive ashes.

You are also invited to join our River47 family for an all ages service at 7pm. (Nursery care for children up to age three will be available for the service).

Within the Evangelical Covenant Church, we believe that as Christians we should walk with Christ not just in the happy times – such as Christmas, Palm Sunday, and Easter – but also remember his times of trial – such as when he went into the wilderness to fast and pray and be tempted, Maundy Thursday in the garden, and Good Friday at the Cross.  Ash Wednesday is where we remember one of those times of trial – and as Christians we take this day to reflect upon what He has done for us and to repent for our sins.

During Ash Wednesday services churchgoers are marked on the forehead with a cross of ashes. The use of ashes, typically made by burning palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday, is extremely symbolic. “God our Father, you create us from the dust of the earth. Grant that these ashes may be for us a sign of our penitence, and a symbol of our mortality.”

While adults are given the mark of the cross with a phrase similar to “remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return” we in the Evangelical Covenant Church use the phrase “Remember what Jesus did for you and believe in Him” with the children.
